IEC Volunteer Programme
In 2000, IEC
was pleased to welcome three volunteers to take on various responsibilities
within the organisation and the IEC Volunteer Programme was born.
We were fortunate to have some initial guidance from Oxfam on how
they manage their established and successful volunteer programme.
We then set about creating very clear descriptions of the areas of
work we wanted our prospective volunteers to take on. We also drew
up a list of benefits to volunteers working at IEC, which are:
skills training (in-house
and external)
a supportive environment
the opportunity to gain
experience in a reputable NGO
out-of-pocket expenses |

Current opportunities
We currently have no opportunities for volunteering at IEC.

Story
of a volunteer project development officer at IEC
Anna Bridges left IEC in 2004 to start an MA at the Institute
of Education. However, we are indebted to her for the work she
has done as a volunteer on our project development team. She
embarked on the task of developing a concept on the reintegration
and rehabilitation of returnee child soldiers in Uganda through
a programme of open learning. Anna says, " I have felt
as if I have been given a lot of responsibility and with that
came a real sense of ownership of the project. One of the highlights
has been telephoning those in the field and establishing relationships
with managers and partners." The project is now in the
final stages of preparation before being submitted to a funder. |

Support
IEC staff will provide ongoing support in terms of general and
specific work issues. Office space and logistical support, including
Internet access, are available at the IEC office, with mentoring
by the Volunteer Coordinator. |
Thank
you . . . .
IEC is very fortunate to have some very talented volunteers
who give their time to help us in aspects of our work. Leah
Selinger worked with us to compile a literature review of
Interactive Radio Instruction for one of our projects. Laura
Vignals Faura worked hard on a refugee project - she has
left to start a new course of study in London.
Anna
Bridges has also gone on to start her MA studies in London
after being with us for a year and developing the Returnee Child
Soldiers project. Not all our volunteers work at our offices
- we are very lucky to have had 2 volunteers who are able to
work at a distance: Margaret Jack assisted on an HIV/AIDS
research project; and Teresa Niccoli has conducted research
into EU funding
and has more recently
she has been looking into funding for a video-education project
for nomadic people. |
